What are the X (Twitter) character limits with and without Premium?

A free X (Twitter) account can post 280 characters. With X Premium, a post can be up to 25,000 characters. PostEverywhere checks your account's tier and applies the right limit.

How counting works#

X counts some characters as two. Emojis and many non-Latin characters take 2 each. A post that looks like 275 characters with 5 emojis is 285 by X's count. When a post is over the limit, PostEverywhere tells you how many characters to remove, and notes when emojis are the cause.

Links count as their full length in PostEverywhere's check.

In the editor#

• The X card shows a counter. When your account is known to be free and the text passes 280, the post is blocked until you shorten it or post from a Premium account.
• If PostEverywhere has not checked the account's tier yet, you see a warning that posts over 280 characters need X Premium.
• Use Add Thread to split long text into a thread. Each post in the thread has its own limit.

Tips#

• Write the long version once, then use Customise per platform to shorten the X text while other platforms keep the full caption.
• An X Article is the right format for long-form content on a Premium account: title, body and a cover image.
