Updated 23 October 2026
Instagram videos must be between 3 seconds and 15 minutes, and every video publishes as a Reel, a Story or a Trial Reel. Instagram no longer has a separate feed video type.
Video rules
| Rule | |
|---|---|
| Length | 3 seconds to 15 minutes |
| Format | MP4 or MOV, H.264 or HEVC, up to 500 MB |
| Frame rate | 23 to 60 fps |
| Aspect ratio | Reels and Stories: vertical 9:16. |
| Size | At least 150 x 150, at most 1920 x 1920 |
| Count | 1 video per post. No mixing with images |
Post types for video
- Reels: the default for a video. Appears in your feed and the Reels tab.
- Story: one video, gone after 24 hours.
- Trial Reel: shown to non-followers first. Instagram promotes it to your followers if it does well.
Choose the type under Post Type in the Instagram card of the post editor.
Image rules
Feed images can be 4:5, 1:1 or 1.91:1, JPG or PNG, 320 x 320 up to 8192 x 8192, and up to 30 MB. Up to 10 images make a carousel. A Story takes one image or one video, no carousel.
Why did my video fail?
- Over 15 minutes: the editor stops it before scheduling. Trim the video.
- Landscape or square Reel: Instagram may crop it or refuse it. Export 9:16.
- Still processing on Instagram: Instagram processes the video after upload. PostEverywhere waits for it, so a Reel can take a few minutes to appear.
- Account checkpoint: see Instagram checkpoint.
