Setup in Copilot Studio

Add the PostEverywhere MCP server in Copilot Studio

“Microsoft Copilot” covers more than one product, and only one of them takes a custom MCP server reliably today: Copilot Studio, Microsoft’s agent builder, where MCP is generally available. Tools are attached per agent, so you add PostEverywhere to the agent that should publish.

  1. 1

    Open or create an agent.

In Copilot Studio, open the agent you want to give publishing tools, or create a new one with instructions about your brand and the accounts it should use.

  2. 2

Add a Model Context Protocol tool.

Go to the agent’s Tools, choose to add a tool and pick the Model Context Protocol option. Microsoft’s guide to connecting an agent to an existing MCP server has the current screens. Give it the server address below.

    https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai
  3. 3

    Choose Streamable transport.

Pick Streamable. Copilot Studio dropped SSE for MCP after August 2025, so an older tutorial that says SSE will not connect.

  4. 4

    Authenticate with an API key.

Choose API key authentication and supply your PostEverywhere key from the Developers page, as a header named Authorization with the value Bearer followed by the key. An agent published to a channel runs unattended, and a scoped, revocable key is the right credential for that.

  5. 5

    Test in the test pane.

Ask: “Show me my connected social accounts on PostEverywhere.” The agent calls list_accounts and returns your linked accounts with their status. If they come back, publish the agent to Teams or wherever your team works.

What you need to connect Copilot to social media

A Copilot Studio licence or entitlement, which is separate from Microsoft 365 Copilot and is the most common blocker, so check it first. You also need a PostEverywhere plan or active 7-day trial, at least one connected social account, and an API key with the write scope.

What your team can ask

Copilot prompts to schedule social media posts from a Copilot Studio agent

Once the agent has the PostEverywhere tools, anyone who can reach it in Teams can ask in plain English. The prompts that earn their keep in a Microsoft shop are the ones that start from a document someone already wrote.

Ask Microsoft Copilot
  • “Draft a launch post for LinkedIn and a shorter one for X (Twitter), and schedule both for Tuesday at 9am.”

Two create_post calls, each fitted to its network’s limits.

  • “Generate an image for the event announcement and schedule it to Instagram for Thursday.”

generate_image, then create_post. Needs the ai scope on the key and uses AI credits.

  • “Show me next week’s queue and tell me where the gaps are.”

Reads get_queue and list_posts, so the team can see the week from Teams.

  • “Did anything fail to publish this week? If so, retry it.”

Finds failed destinations and calls retry_failed_post. Silent failures are the expensive kind.

  • “Summarise last month’s results by platform.”

get_analytics_summary, with the figures each network reports.

Skills for Microsoft Copilot

PostEverywhere skills for GitHub Copilot, and Copilot Studio instructions

GitHub Copilot in your editor reads agent skills, so one npx command adds the PostEverywhere set to your project. A Copilot Studio agent works differently: it has no skills folder, so paste the steps from a skill into the agent’s instructions, or start from the prompts below.

For any other agent that reads skills, add them with one npx command.

Each skill links to its SKILL.md on GitHub, which is the text to copy into a Copilot Studio agent’s instructions.

Your calendar

Copilot schedules, your team sees it in the calendar

Everything the Copilot agent schedules lands in the PostEverywhere calendar with its time, accounts and status. Teammates with access to the workspace can open any post and change it before it goes out. If you want a person to sign off every post, have the agent save drafts and let the team schedule them, because posts made through an API key do not pass through PostEverywhere’s approval queue.

Drafts for review.
Tell the agent “drafts only” in its instructions. Drafts wait in the calendar until someone schedules them.
One calendar for the team.
Posts from Copilot, from the web composer and from any other assistant sit side by side, so nothing is double-booked.
Official APIs only.
PostEverywhere publishes through each network’s own API. Copilot never holds a social password.

Example data

  • The Copilot Chat limitation to know first. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, Copilot in Excel and Researcher support federated MCP connectors, which is a narrower path than adding a server yourself in Studio. Microsoft’s own support forum has reports of Copilot Chat and Excel not consistently calling a custom federated connector, with requests failing before they reach the server. If your plan is to paste an address into the Copilot box in Word, expect friction; a Copilot Studio agent published to Teams is the reliable route.

  • Using GitHub Copilot instead? GitHub Copilot is a different product that lives in your editor. In VS Code agent mode, add PostEverywhere to .vscode/mcp.json under servers, with type http, the connector address as url, and an Authorization header holding Bearer and your key.

  • Agents run unattended. Nobody approves each tool call once the agent is published. Until you trust it, instruct it to save drafts or schedule for later rather than publish now. Scheduled posts stay editable; a published post usually cannot be recalled.

  • The server will not connect. Check the transport first: Streamable is the only option that works for MCP in Copilot Studio now. Then confirm your PostEverywhere subscription is active, because the server refuses calls from an inactive workspace.

  • Works in Studio, fails in Chat. That is the known Copilot Chat inconsistency above, not a problem with your configuration.

  • Not included. Replying to comments or DMs, and connecting new social accounts. A person connects accounts once, in the PostEverywhere app.

Which Copilot

Which Copilot you have, and why it matters

Copilot Studio is the agent builder. You create an agent, give it instructions and tools, and publish it to a channel such as Teams or a website. MCP servers arrive through Microsoft’s connector infrastructure, so they inherit the controls IT already uses for connectors, such as data loss prevention policies, and Microsoft’s announcement that MCP is generally available in Copilot Studio covers how servers are surfaced.

One request, one result per accountExample data

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is the assistant in Word, Outlook, Teams and the Windows taskbar. It uses federated connectors rather than servers you add yourself, with the limitation above. GitHub Copilot is a coding assistant in your editor, with its own MCP setup.

  • For most people who want a Microsoft assistant that publishes, Copilot Studio is the answer, and the rest of this page is about that.

  • Not every job needs an agent. If the publishing logic is fixed, a Power Automate flow calling the social media API is cheaper and more predictable than a model in the middle. The API guide walks through it, rate limits are 60 requests a minute per key, and signed webhooks tell a flow when a post publishes or fails. Use an agent where the decision really varies.

  • For agencies and larger teams, team workspaces keep each brand’s accounts separate, and keys are scoped to a workspace, so one Copilot agent per client is a clean pattern. Every plan includes the MCP server, from $9 a month; Scale adds up to five workspaces.

FAQ

Copilot social media FAQ

Straight answers about plans, platforms and how scheduling works.

Can Microsoft Copilot post to social media?

Yes, through a Copilot Studio agent connected to the PostEverywhere MCP server, which publishes to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X (Twitter), Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Discord, Telegram and WordPress through each network’s official API. Copilot has no social posting of its own.

How do I add an MCP server in Copilot Studio?

Open the agent, go to Tools, add a tool, choose Model Context Protocol, paste https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai, pick Streamable transport and authenticate with your PostEverywhere API key. Then test it in the test pane.

Does Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat support custom connectors?

Copilot Chat supports federated MCP connectors, but adding your own server is a Copilot Studio capability, and there are reports of Chat and Excel not consistently calling custom connectors. A Studio agent published to Teams is the dependable path.

Is GitHub Copilot the same as Microsoft Copilot here?

No. GitHub Copilot is an editor assistant. It can use the PostEverywhere server too, through VS Code’s MCP configuration, but the setup is different from Copilot Studio.

Do I need a Copilot Studio licence?

Yes. Copilot Studio is licensed separately from Microsoft 365 Copilot. Check your entitlement before you start.

Which transport should I choose in Copilot Studio?

Streamable. Copilot Studio no longer supports SSE for MCP, so any guide telling you to select SSE is out of date.

Is there a free trial?

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. A card is required to start it, $0 is due today, and you can cancel anytime. There is no free plan; API and MCP access come with every plan.
