How to connect ChatGPT to social media in Developer mode

ChatGPT talks to outside tools through custom connectors, which are remote Model Context Protocol servers. They stay hidden until you switch on Developer mode, so that is always the first step. After that you add the PostEverywhere MCP server by its address and approve it once.

  1. 1

    Turn on Developer mode.

On chatgpt.com, open Settings, then the Apps section (shown as Connectors on some accounts), open Advanced settings and switch on Developer mode. On Business and Enterprise workspaces an admin may need to allow it first.

  2. 2

Add the PostEverywhere MCP server in ChatGPT.

In the same section, create a new custom connector. Call it PostEverywhere and paste the connector address below. There is no client ID or secret to find.

    https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai
  3. 3

    Sign in and approve.

Follow ChatGPT’s prompt to sign in to PostEverywhere, then approve access. If ChatGPT asks for a key instead, create one on the Developers page in PostEverywhere and paste it. Either way the credential is revocable from your dashboard.

  4. 4

    Check the connection.

Open a new chat, choose PostEverywhere from the tools for that conversation and ask “Show me my connected social accounts on PostEverywhere.” ChatGPT should list your linked profiles and whether each one is healthy.

What you need to connect ChatGPT to social media

A paid ChatGPT plan: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Free ChatGPT accounts cannot add custom connectors. Developer mode is on the web only, so set it up at chatgpt.com rather than in the phone or desktop apps. On the PostEverywhere side you need an account with at least one social profile connected under Accounts.

What you can ask

ChatGPT prompts to schedule social media posts through a custom connector

These are action prompts, not writing tips: each one makes ChatGPT call a PostEverywhere tool. ChatGPT asks you to confirm before anything that changes your schedule runs, so you see exactly what it is about to do.

Ask ChatGPT
  • “Take the five ideas above, write a caption for each and schedule them Monday to Friday at 10am on LinkedIn and Facebook.”

A week of posts from one message, no spreadsheet needed.

  • “Draft a launch post, make a short X (Twitter) version and a longer LinkedIn one, and book both for tomorrow at 9am Eastern.”

Two tones, one announcement, the same publish time.

  • “Which of my accounts have I not posted to in the last two weeks?”

Compares your accounts with recent posts so nothing goes quiet.

  • “Did anything fail to publish this week? If so, retry it.”

Finds failed posts and sends them again.

  • “Import the image at this link and schedule it to Instagram on Friday at noon with the caption we wrote.”

Pulls the image into your media library and attaches it.

  • “Save these as drafts. I will look at them in the calendar before anything goes out.”

Nothing publishes until you schedule the drafts yourself.

Skills for ChatGPT

Add the PostEverywhere skills to ChatGPT from one zip

Download the zip and add it to ChatGPT, and each skill tells ChatGPT which PostEverywhere tools to call for one job and in what order. The skills pair with the custom connector you set up in Developer mode: ChatGPT follows the skill to plan and write, then the connector does the publishing.

Install for ChatGPT

Download every skill in one zip and add it to ChatGPT. Each skill also has its own zip on its card below.

Your calendar

Review every scheduled ChatGPT post in your PostEverywhere calendar before it goes live

A chat is a bad place to keep track of a month of posts. Everything ChatGPT schedules is stored in PostEverywhere, so you and your team see it in one calendar, can open any post to edit it, and can follow its status from Scheduled through Publishing to Posted. Treat ChatGPT like a new colleague for the first week: let it save drafts, then schedule the ones you like.

Edit after the chat ends.
Change a caption, a time or an image in the calendar. ChatGPT does not need to be open.
One queue for everyone.
Posts from ChatGPT sit next to posts your team wrote in the app, so nothing is double-booked.
Failures you can see.
A failed post is marked Failed with the reason, so you can fix it in the app or ask ChatGPT to retry.

Connect ChatGPT to Instagram, LinkedIn and every top platform

ChatGPT never connects to Instagram or LinkedIn directly. You link each profile to PostEverywhere once, and ChatGPT reaches all of them through the one connector, with posts sent through each network’s official API.

Example data

  • There is nowhere to add a connector. Developer mode is off, or your plan does not include it. Free ChatGPT accounts cannot add custom connectors, and the switch only appears on the web.

  • The tools do not appear in a chat. Pick PostEverywhere from the tools for that conversation, and check the address has no typing mistakes. On Business or Enterprise, confirm an admin has allowed custom connectors for your workspace.

  • ChatGPT needs the hosted server. ChatGPT only connects to remote servers on the internet. The open-source @posteverywhere/mcp package runs on your own machine, which suits desktop and code tools but not ChatGPT, so always use the hosted address.

  • A smaller tool set than code tools get. Through ChatGPT, PostEverywhere offers 30 tools, a slimmer set than the 38 that code tools get on the full server. It covers the everyday jobs of writing, scheduling and checking posts; for developer work such as webhooks, use the API directly, and make artwork in AI Studio before asking ChatGPT to attach it.

  • Rate limits. The API allows 60 requests a minute per key. A normal conversation never gets close; if you want hundreds of posts at once, use bulk scheduling in the app instead.

  • Cutting ChatGPT off. Delete the connector in ChatGPT and revoke its key on the Developers page in PostEverywhere. Scheduled posts still publish, because they live in PostEverywhere rather than in the chat.

Why connect ChatGPT

What ChatGPT can do with your social media accounts once connected

For years, using ChatGPT for social media meant caption writing and nothing more. It could draft the post, but you still carried the text to every network by hand, five tabs and a lot of pasting. A custom connector changes that: ChatGPT can now list your accounts, create and schedule posts, import images from a link, check whether anything failed and retry it, all without leaving the conversation where the ideas came from.

One request, one result per accountExample data

  • PostEverywhere sits between ChatGPT and the networks. ChatGPT decides what to say and when; PostEverywhere holds the authorised connections, applies each platform’s limits and publishes. Your Instagram password never goes anywhere near a chatbot, and the connector’s only credential can be revoked from your dashboard in seconds.

  • The always-on version: [OpenAI Dots](/agents/dots). A Dot keeps working after you close the tab, so it can plan the week and draft posts for your approval on a schedule, through the same custom connector.

  • Alternative: a Custom GPT with PostEverywhere Actions. Before Developer mode existed, the way to give ChatGPT tools was a Custom GPT wired to a REST API with GPT Actions. That still works with the PostEverywhere API and suits teams that want to share one locked-down “social media GPT” with set instructions on tone and approval wording. It takes more setup and covers less than the connector, so for one person managing their own accounts, the connector is the better fit.

  • A PostEverywhere app for ChatGPT has been submitted to OpenAI and is in review. Until it is approved, Developer mode is the way in, and the connector above gives you the same publishing tools. If you are weighing ChatGPT against other assistants for writing, our assistant comparison for social media covers that side.

FAQ

ChatGPT social media FAQ

Straight answers about plans, platforms and how scheduling works.

Can ChatGPT post to social media?

Not by itself. ChatGPT has no posting ability of its own, but with PostEverywhere added as a custom connector it can create, schedule and publish posts to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X (Twitter), Facebook, Threads and the other platforms you connect.

How do I connect ChatGPT to Instagram?

Connect your Instagram professional account to PostEverywhere under Accounts, then add PostEverywhere to ChatGPT in Developer mode. ChatGPT can then schedule Instagram posts, including images imported from a public link.

Does ChatGPT support MCP?

Yes. ChatGPT supports remote MCP servers as custom connectors when Developer mode is switched on. It does not run local MCP servers, which is why PostEverywhere hosts one at https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai.

Does ChatGPT Plus have MCP?

Yes. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu can all add custom MCP connectors through Developer mode on the web. Free accounts cannot.

Which ChatGPT plans can use the PostEverywhere connector?

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, on chatgpt.com. On Business and Enterprise, a workspace admin may need to switch Developer mode on before members can add the connector.

Can ChatGPT schedule posts for later?

Yes. Give it a day and time, including a time zone if it matters, and it books the post for then. It can also save drafts and move scheduled posts to new times.

Is the PostEverywhere ChatGPT app live?

Not yet. The app is in review with OpenAI. Today you connect through Developer mode as a custom connector, which takes a couple of minutes and gives you the same publishing tools.

Is there a free trial?

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. A card is needed to start, you pay nothing on day one, and you can cancel anytime in the first week. PostEverywhere has no free plan; the ChatGPT connector comes with every paid plan.
