Setup in VS Code

Add the PostEverywhere MCP server to Cline’s MCP settings

Cline is an open-source coding agent that runs as a VS Code extension with the model provider of your choice. It manages MCP servers in its own panel, which writes to a settings file Cline keeps for you.

  1. 1

    Create a PostEverywhere API key.

    Connect your social accounts under Accounts in PostEverywhere, then create a key on the Developers page. It starts with pe_live_. Turn on the ai scope if Cline should generate images.

  2. 2

    Open Cline’s MCP Servers panel.

    In the Cline sidebar, click the MCP Servers icon, then choose to configure your servers. Cline opens its MCP settings file, cline_mcp_settings.json, in the editor.

  3. 3

    Paste the PostEverywhere block.

    This runs the open-source @posteverywhere/mcp server through npx, which needs Node.js 18 or newer. Replace the placeholder with your key and save. If other servers are already there, add posteverywhere inside the existing mcpServers object.

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "posteverywhere": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "@posteverywhere/mcp"],
          "env": { "POSTEVERYWHERE_API_KEY": "pe_live_YOUR_KEY" }
        }
      }
    }
  4. 4

    Check the server is green, then test.

    Back in the panel, PostEverywhere should show as connected with its tools listed. Ask Cline: “List my connected social accounts on PostEverywhere.” It asks permission to call list_accounts, then shows your accounts and their status.

What you need to connect Cline to social media

VS Code with the Cline extension and a model provider set up in Cline, Node.js 18 or newer, a PostEverywhere plan or active 7-day trial, at least one connected social account and an API key. The key stays in the server’s environment and is not sent to your model provider.

What you can ask Cline

Cline prompts to schedule social media posts from VS Code

Cline is at home in your repository and your terminal, so the useful requests start from code: commits, diffs, docs and release tags. Ask for drafts while you are getting used to it, and schedule once you like what it writes.

Ask Cline
  • “Summarise the commits since the last tag for users, not developers, and save it as a LinkedIn draft.”

    Runs git log in the terminal (with your permission), then create_post with draft set to true.

  • “Schedule the LinkedIn draft for Monday at 10am and the Bluesky one for Tuesday at 10am.”

    schedule_post turns each draft into a scheduled post with its own time.

  • “Post to our Telegram channel now: the 0.9 beta build is up, link in the docs.”

    Publishes immediately to the channel you connected in PostEverywhere.

  • “Explain the new sync engine in one X post, using docs/sync.md, and schedule it for Wednesday at 3pm.”

    Reads the doc, keeps the post inside X’s character limit, and schedules it.

  • “Which posts this month failed, and why?”

    Reads get_post_results for each failure and explains the error.

Skills for Cline

Add the PostEverywhere skills to Cline

Cline already plans before it acts, and the skills give it a plan worth following for social work. Install them with npx, and when you ask Cline to repurpose a doc or chase a failed post it reads the matching skill first, while you can still approve each PostEverywhere tool call as it happens.

Your calendar

Drafts and posts from Cline land in your calendar

Every draft and scheduled post Cline creates shows up in the PostEverywhere calendar, with a status of Draft, Scheduled, Posted or Failed. Your marketing team can read, edit and schedule Cline’s drafts in the web app without ever opening VS Code.

Drafts by default, if you like.
Add “save posts as drafts unless I say schedule” to your Cline rules and every session starts that way.
A hand-off to marketing.
Engineering writes the accurate first draft from the code; marketing polishes and schedules it in the calendar.
Every network’s limits checked.
get_platform_rules keeps a Bluesky post under its limit and tells Cline that Instagram needs an image or video, before anything is saved.

Example data

  • Cline asks before each tool call. By default Cline asks your permission before every MCP call, which is a good fit for publishing. You can auto-approve individual tools. A sensible split: auto-approve read-only tools such as list_accounts, list_posts and get_queue, and keep create_post, schedule_post and delete_post on ask.

  • The panel does not validate what you paste. Cline accepts a malformed block without complaint, so a server that will not start is almost always a JSON problem: a missing brace, a trailing comma, or the key outside the env object.

  • Test the server outside Cline. Run POSTEVERYWHERE_API_KEY=pe_live_YOUR_KEY npx -y @posteverywhere/mcp in the VS Code terminal. A working server starts and waits. If it exits saying the key is required, the env block is the problem.

  • Images from your repo. There is no tool for uploading a file from disk. Host the image (a release asset or your docs site works) and ask Cline to import it with upload_media_from_url, or let it call generate_image.

  • Remote server instead of npx. If you would rather not run Node, Cline can also connect to the hosted server at https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai over streamable HTTP, with an Authorization header holding Bearer and your key.

  • Not included. Replying to comments or DMs, and connecting new social accounts. Those stay in the PostEverywhere app.

Why connect Cline

Cline MCP settings and the way you work

Cline’s approach suits publishing well. It plans before it acts, it shows you each tool call with its arguments, and it waits for a yes. A post is one of the few things a coding agent does that cannot be undone with git, so that pause is worth keeping for the write tools even after you trust the rest.

One request, one result per accountExample data

  • Project rules help too. A .clinerules file in the repo can hold your brand voice, the accounts to use for release news, and an instruction to save drafts unless told otherwise. Every teammate who uses Cline in that repo then gets the same behaviour.

  • Because Cline brings your own model provider, the writing quality follows the model you choose. PostEverywhere does not care which one: the server sees the same tool calls from any of them.

  • Cline is one way in. If part of the team works in Cursor or Windsurf, the same JSON block works there. The same API key also works with the social media API, the Node SDK and the PostEverywhere CLI, so a release pipeline can post on every tag automatically while Cline handles the posts that need a human read. Webhooks report back when a post publishes or fails, and the developer docs cover scopes and rate limits.

  • For a launch, cross-posting sends one announcement to every account with a different version for each, and the social media calendar shows the whole week to everyone involved.

  • Every plan includes the MCP server and the API, from $9 a month. Compare plans.

FAQ

Cline social media FAQ

Straight answers about plans, platforms and how scheduling works.

How do I add an MCP server to Cline?

Open the MCP Servers panel in the Cline sidebar, choose to configure servers, and add an entry under mcpServers in the settings file. For PostEverywhere, the entry runs npx with @posteverywhere/mcp and sets POSTEVERYWHERE_API_KEY. Save, and the server starts.

Does Cline need an API key for PostEverywhere?

Yes, a PostEverywhere key from the Developers page. It is separate from the model provider key you gave Cline, and you can revoke it at any time.

Can Cline schedule posts for later?

Yes. Give it a date and time and it schedules the post. It can also save drafts for later, publish now, or turn an existing draft into a scheduled post.

Does Cline auto-approve MCP tool calls?

Not unless you tell it to. Cline asks before each call by default, and you can auto-approve individual tools. We suggest auto-approving read-only tools and keeping posting and deleting on ask.

Which platforms can Cline post to?

Every account you connect in PostEverywhere: Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, X (Twitter), Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Telegram, Discord and WordPress.

Is there a free trial?

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. A card is required to start it, $0 is due today, and you can cancel anytime. There is no free plan; the MCP server comes with every plan.
