Setup for Gemini CLI
Connect Gemini CLI to social media with the MCP server
Gemini CLI is Google’s open-source agent for the terminal, and it reads MCP servers from a settings file. One JSON block connects it to the PostEverywhere server at the address below, and the tools load the next time you start a session. The setup takes about five minutes.
- 1
Connect your social accounts and create a key.
In PostEverywhere, connect the accounts you want Gemini to post to under Accounts, then open Developers and create an API key. Keys start with pe_live_ and you can revoke one at any time. Turn on the ai scope too if you want Gemini to generate images.
- 2
Open your Gemini settings file.
The user-wide file is ~/.gemini/settings.json. Create it if it does not exist. A .gemini/settings.json inside a project folder works too, and keeps the connection limited to that one project.
https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai - 3
Add the PostEverywhere server.
Paste this block and swap in your real key. The property is httpUrl, which is how Gemini CLI names a streamable HTTP server. The plain url property is for older SSE servers, so a block that uses url will not connect here.
{ "mcpServers": { "posteverywhere": { "httpUrl": "https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer pe_live_YOUR_KEY" } } } } - 4
Restart Gemini CLI and check the connection.
Start a new session and type /mcp to see PostEverywhere and its tools listed. Then ask: “Show me my connected social accounts on PostEverywhere.” Gemini calls list_accounts and replies with your linked accounts and their status. If they come back, you are connected.
What you need to connect Gemini to social media
Gemini CLI installed and signed in with a Google account (the CLI itself is free to use), a PostEverywhere plan or an active 7-day trial, at least one connected social account, and an API key from the Developers page. The consumer Gemini app at gemini.google.com cannot add custom connectors, so it cannot use this setup.
What you can ask
Gemini prompts to schedule social media posts from Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI can read the files in your working folder, which makes it good at turning things you already wrote (release notes, transcripts, docs) into posts. Name the action and a time, and it calls the PostEverywhere tools to do it.
“Turn transcript.txt from Tuesday’s webinar into five LinkedIn posts and schedule one each weekday at 9am.”
Reads the file, then calls create_post five times with a time for each.
“Make a square image for the launch post, then schedule it to Instagram and Facebook for Friday at noon.”
Calls generate_image, then create_post with the image attached. Uses AI credits and needs the ai scope on your key.
“Save three drafts about our new pricing page. Don’t schedule anything yet.”
create_post with draft set to true. The drafts wait in your calendar until you, or a later prompt, schedule them.
“What is in the queue for next week, and which days have nothing?”
Reads get_queue and list_posts and points out the empty days.
“Did anything fail to publish since Monday? Retry it.”
Finds failed destinations with list_posts, then calls retry_failed_post.
Skills for Gemini
Install the PostEverywhere skills as a Gemini CLI extension
Gemini CLI installs extensions straight from a GitHub repo, and the PostEverywhere skills repo installs as one. After that, Gemini knows how to run a content calendar, cross-post a video or write an X thread from your terminal, using the MCP server you connected in the setup above.

Your calendar
Every post Gemini schedules lands in your calendar
Gemini does the writing and the tool calls, and PostEverywhere keeps the record. Each post shows up in the calendar with its time, its accounts and a status of Scheduled, Publishing, Posted or Failed, so you can check the week at a glance or edit a word before it goes out.
- Edit after Gemini.
- Open any post Gemini scheduled and change the caption, time or accounts in the composer, including Customise per platform for a different version on each network.
- Drafts stay drafts.
- Ask for drafts and nothing publishes until you schedule them, in the app or by telling Gemini “schedule the second draft for Tuesday”.
- Published through official APIs.
- PostEverywhere sends each post through the network’s own API. Gemini never sees a social password.

Example data
Publishing, scheduling and drafts. Create a post, schedule it for an exact time, publish it now, save it as a draft or turn a draft into a scheduled post with schedule_post. Up to 50 posts can go in one bulk_create_posts call when a prompt fans out into a whole month.
Images, captions and media. generate_image makes an image from a prompt and generate_caption writes caption variants, both from your plan’s AI credits. upload_media_from_url pulls in an image or video from a public link. There is no tool for uploading a file from your disk, so host the file first or upload it in the app.
Health checks and results. get_account_health spots an expired connection before a post fails, and get_post_results shows which networks published and which did not. Analytics come back where each network reports them, which varies a lot by platform.
The Gemini API, for your own agent. If you are building an agent rather than chatting in a terminal, Google’s Gemini API managed agents support remote MCP servers. Point the agent at the connector address with your bearer key and it can call the same tools mid-task.
Gemini Enterprise. Google Cloud organisations can register a custom MCP server in Gemini Enterprise. An admin does this once for the organisation.
What it will not do. It cannot reply to comments or DMs, and it cannot connect a new social account for you. Connecting accounts happens once in the PostEverywhere app, in a browser, by a person.

One request, one result per accountExample data
Gemini has no social integrations of its own. In every working setup, Gemini connects to the PostEverywhere server, and PostEverywhere holds the authorised account connections and publishes through each platform’s official API. Gemini reasons and writes; PostEverywhere publishes; the network receives. Without a connector in the app, there is nothing for the app to call.
When Google adds connectors to the app, the setup should carry over almost directly: the same address, the same account, the same tools. We will update this page when it happens rather than guess at a date.
Until then, a simple routine works well for people who write in the Gemini app. Draft in Gemini: hooks, captions, a week of ideas. Publish with PostEverywhere: paste the drafts into the composer once, use Customise per platform for the networks that need a different length, and schedule the batch on the content calendar. Our guide to using AI for social media covers where Gemini’s writing is strongest.
If you would rather skip the copy and paste, Gemini CLI is the quickest way to close the gap. It runs in any terminal, it is free to use with a Google account, and once the server is connected, the same prompt that writes a post can cross-post it to every account. Developers wiring Gemini into their own product can call the social media API directly with the same key, and get signed webhooks when posts publish or fail.

FAQ
Gemini social media FAQ
Straight answers about plans, platforms and how scheduling works.
Can Gemini post to social media?
Yes, through Gemini CLI or the Gemini API connected to the PostEverywhere MCP server. Gemini can then create, schedule and publish posts to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X (Twitter), Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Telegram, Discord and WordPress. The consumer Gemini app cannot do this yet.
Can the Gemini app use MCP connectors?
Not at the moment. Custom MCP servers work in Gemini CLI, Gemini API managed agents and Gemini Enterprise, but the app at gemini.google.com has no option to add one. Use Gemini CLI for now, or draft in the app and schedule in PostEverywhere.
How do I add an MCP server to Gemini CLI?
Add an entry under mcpServers in ~/.gemini/settings.json. For PostEverywhere, use the httpUrl property with the connector address and an Authorization header holding Bearer and your API key. Restart the CLI and the tools load on their own.
Is Gemini CLI free to use with PostEverywhere?
Gemini CLI is free to use with a personal Google account, within Google’s usage limits. PostEverywhere needs a plan from $9 a month. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. A card is required to start it, $0 is due today, and you can cancel anytime.
Is it safe to connect Gemini to my social accounts?
Gemini only ever holds a PostEverywhere API key, never a social password, and every post goes out through the official platform APIs. Keep the settings file out of public repositories, and revoke the key on the Developers page if you stop using it. Safe agent access covers the wider question.
Should I use Gemini or another assistant to post?
For a no-terminal setup today, Claude and ChatGPT both take a custom connector in their apps; Gemini needs the CLI or the API. All of them publish into the same PostEverywhere calendar, so you can switch later. Our comparison of the three for social media goes deeper on writing quality.
