ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity for Social Media (Head-to-Head Tests)


Most marketers pick one AI tool and stop. They open ChatGPT, write a caption, accept it, ship it. Or they fall in love with Claude because it "sounds more human" and start running everything through it. Or they discover Perplexity and suddenly every research task goes there, even the ones it's bad at.
That's the wrong approach. After a year of running our team's content through all three, I can tell you the right answer: use all three for different jobs. They have different strengths, and the gap between them is task-specific, not general. The AI that writes your best LinkedIn hook is not the AI that finds your best competitor research, which is also not the AI that generates 30 caption variations fastest.
This post is the head-to-head I wish I'd had twelve months ago. I ran 12 real social media tasks through ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, with the same prompts where that was fair, and scored them on the criteria that actually matter for social teams: voice, factual accuracy, structure, speed, and how much editing the output needed before it could go live. I'll show you the prompts, describe the outputs, call a winner for each task, and tell you who should use which tool when. There's a verdict table at the end if you're skimming.
Methodology (how I actually tested)
Three accounts, all paid tiers: ChatGPT Plus on GPT-5, Claude Pro on Sonnet 4.5, Perplexity Pro on its default Sonar Large. Tests run in April 2026. For each task, I used an identical prompt across all three tools in a fresh conversation — no system prompts, no custom instructions, nothing pre-loaded. The only exception is where a task was legitimately unfair to one tool (for example, asking Perplexity to write a brand-voice caption from scratch is pointless — it's a research tool, and scoring it against writers on writing tasks would be dishonest). In those cases I noted the mismatch.
Scoring was subjective across five criteria: voice (does it sound like a person, or like a LinkedIn post written by committee?), accuracy (are the facts real?), structure (does the output match the platform format?), usability (how much editing before I'd publish?), and speed (including time spent regenerating). I called a winner per task based on which output I'd ship with the least work. This is what marketers actually care about — not benchmark scores, ship-ability.

Head-to-head tests
Test 1: Writing an Instagram caption (brand voice — sarcastic SaaS founder)
Prompt used for all three:
"Write an Instagram caption (150 words max) announcing our new AI content generator feature. Brand voice: sarcastic SaaS founder who's tired of marketing platitudes. Hooks the reader in the first line. No emojis at start. Ends with a light CTA to try it. Product: PostEverywhere, a social media scheduling tool."
ChatGPT's output opened with "Stop writing captions at 11pm like a gremlin." Punchy, fit the brand, but the middle paragraph slipped into generic SaaS copy — "streamline your workflow and amplify your reach" — before recovering at the end. Needed a middle-paragraph rewrite.
Claude's output opened with "I built a content scheduler because I got sick of marketing tools that sound like they were written by a HR department having a panic attack." Maintained the sarcastic voice the whole way through. The line "our AI doesn't 'unlock your potential' — it writes the caption so you can close the laptop" was the best single sentence across all three.
Perplexity's output was technically a caption but read like a product announcement. It invented a citation to "social media trends 2026" mid-caption, which is the exact problem with using research tools for creative writing.
Winner: Claude. Voice consistency on brand-voice tasks is its strongest lane. Use ChatGPT if you want 10 caption variations to pick from. Skip Perplexity entirely for creative short-form.
Test 2: Writing a 10-tweet X thread
Prompt: "Write a 10-tweet X thread on 'the 5 metrics I wish I'd tracked earlier as a SaaS founder.' First tweet is the hook. Each tweet under 280 characters. Threads flows, doesn't just list. End with a CTA to subscribe."
ChatGPT delivered clean structure, hit character limits exactly, and used the classic "1/10... 2/10..." format without being asked. The hook was functional but forgettable: "5 metrics I wish I'd tracked earlier. Here's what I learned the hard way." Thread logic was fine but each tweet felt like a bullet rather than a beat in a story.
Claude opened with "I sold a SaaS company last year. Here are the 5 numbers I'd obsess over from day one of the next one." Tweets built on each other — tweet 4 referenced tweet 2, tweet 8 paid off tweet 1. Two tweets slightly exceeded 280 characters and needed trimming.
Perplexity produced a thread that read like a research summary with citations to HubSpot and SaaStr inserted into individual tweets. Accurate but felt like a link-roundup, not a founder's voice.
Winner: Claude. Narrative threads are its strongest format. ChatGPT wins if you want pure listicle threads and don't want to manually add the "1/" numbering. Perplexity wins if the thread's premise is "here are stats you didn't know."
Test 3: Writing a LinkedIn post with hook
Prompt: "Write a LinkedIn post (250 words, short paragraphs for mobile) about hiring your first marketer as a founder. First line is the hook. No hashtags. Avoid LinkedIn clichés ('humbled,' 'excited to announce')."
ChatGPT's hook was "Your first marketing hire will either save your company or bankrupt it." Strong. But by paragraph three it drifted into "alignment," "bandwidth," and "strategic vision" — the LinkedIn cliché trifecta. Needed heavy pruning.
Claude's hook was "I hired my first marketer six months too late. Here's the specific mistake that cost me $80k." It resisted the cliché drift — no "alignment," no "bandwidth," no "journey." Short paragraphs as asked. This is publish-ready.
Perplexity wrote a competent post but cited a 2023 HubSpot report mid-paragraph ("According to a 2023 HubSpot survey, 67% of founders..."). I couldn't verify the specific stat without a second round. The citation impulse kills the flow on LinkedIn.
Winner: Claude. When the brief says "avoid clichés," Claude actually avoids them. ChatGPT needs a follow-up prompt to strip the corporate-speak.
Test 4: Coming up with 30 content ideas for a niche (skincare)
Prompt: "Give me 30 content ideas for a skincare brand's Instagram. Mix of educational, entertainment, UGC prompts, and behind-the-scenes. Avoid generic ideas like 'morning routine.' Be specific."
ChatGPT generated 30 ideas in 15 seconds, grouped into four clean categories as requested. About 20 of the 30 were actually specific and usable ("timelapse of a patch test gone wrong," "ingredient breakdown of why your cleanser stings"). The other 10 were still slightly generic.
Claude generated 30 ideas slower, but the quality was higher — closer to 26 of 30 were original and specific. One idea in particular — "behind the scenes of a regulatory test where we failed and had to reformulate" — was the kind of idea a human strategist would come up with.
Perplexity actually did surprisingly well here because it grounded ideas in current skincare trends it pulled from live search. A couple of ideas referenced specific April 2026 trends (slugging revivals, the peptide backlash) that the other two missed entirely.
Winner: ChatGPT. For volume brainstorming where you're going to cherry-pick the best 10, ChatGPT's speed and structure win. Claude wins if you want 10 great ideas and not 30 okay ones. Perplexity wins if trend-currency matters more than volume.
Test 5: Researching 3 competitors' recent campaigns
Prompt: "Give me a summary of the 3 most recent social media campaigns from Later, Buffer, and Hootsuite. What platforms they ran on, what the creative angle was, what the response looked like. Last 6 months only."
ChatGPT gave a confident answer with specific campaign names. When I checked, two of the three "campaigns" were hallucinated — plausible-sounding but not real. This is the exact scenario where ChatGPT without browsing is dangerous for marketers.
Claude refused to answer with specifics and said it couldn't verify recent campaigns without web access. Correct answer, but unhelpful.
Perplexity returned real campaigns with source links. Later's "Link in Bio" repositioning, Buffer's founder-led podcast push, Hootsuite's "social team burnout" report — all verifiable. This is the entire reason Perplexity exists.
Winner: Perplexity, and it's not close. Any task that requires "what happened in the last X months" must go through Perplexity. The hallucination risk with ChatGPT on current events is a career-ending mistake waiting to happen.
Test 6: Generating trending hashtags for TikTok this week
Prompt: "What hashtags are trending on TikTok this week in the beauty and skincare niche? Give me 15, with rough volume estimates."
ChatGPT produced 15 hashtags with made-up volume estimates ("#cleangirlaesthetic — 2.4M views this week"). The hashtags were plausible but the volumes were pure fabrication.
Claude again declined to give current trends without web access. Honest but useless.
Perplexity pulled 15 real hashtags from recent TikTok trend reports and creator posts, with ranges rather than fake-precise numbers ("#skinflooding — growing fast, 500k-1M weekly views per trend tracker sites"). It also flagged which were rising vs plateauing.
Winner: Perplexity. Same logic as Test 5. For any "this week" query, only Perplexity is safe. I use our own hashtag generator for volume-stable hashtags, but for trend-of-the-week, Perplexity.
Test 7: Writing a YouTube video title + description optimised for SEO
Prompt: "Write a YouTube title (under 60 characters) and description (first 150 chars critical) for a video called 'I tried posting at 3am for 30 days.' Title should be SEO-friendly. Description should hook and include relevant keywords naturally."
ChatGPT delivered five title variations ("I Posted at 3am Every Day for a Month — Here's What Happened"), chose its recommended one, and wrote a 200-word description with timestamps and keywords folded in. Structurally flawless. The title was slightly baity.
Claude delivered one title and one description. The title — "Posting at 3am for 30 days: the data nobody shows you" — was sharper than ChatGPT's but pushed the character count. Description was tighter but missed some SEO keyword placements.
Perplexity produced a title plus description but also included unrequested SEO tips at the end, which is useful context but cluttered the output.
Winner: ChatGPT. YouTube optimisation is structured work, and ChatGPT's ability to spit out variations with built-in SEO instincts is unmatched. Use Claude for the final title refinement after ChatGPT generates the candidate pool.
Test 8: Finding relevant stats for a "state of social" blog post
Prompt: "Give me 10 recent (2025-2026) statistics for a 'state of social media 2026' blog post. Include sources. Mix of user behaviour, platform growth, and marketing spend."
ChatGPT produced 10 confident-sounding stats with made-up or outdated sources. Half referenced "eMarketer 2024" or "HubSpot State of Marketing 2023" — the hallmarks of pre-cutoff data being dressed up as fresh.
Claude declined to fabricate stats and suggested using a web tool.
Perplexity returned 10 stats, all with clickable citation links to the original sources (Pew, DataReportal, eMarketer, Hootsuite's actual 2026 report). About 8 of 10 checked out on source-verification; 2 needed slight rewording to match what the source actually said.
Winner: Perplexity, by a wide margin. Any stat you put in published work has to be verifiable. Perplexity's citations aren't perfect but they're traceable. ChatGPT's stats without browsing are a lawsuit risk.
Test 9: Repurposing one blog post into 5 platform-specific posts
Prompt: "Here's a 1,200-word blog post. Repurpose it into: (1) a LinkedIn post, (2) an X thread, (3) an Instagram caption, (4) a TikTok script, (5) a YouTube Shorts script. Match each platform's tone and length norms." (Blog post pasted in.)
ChatGPT delivered all 5 formats in one response, correctly length-calibrated, each platform's tone roughly right. LinkedIn leaned formal, X was punchy, Instagram was friendly, TikTok had on-screen-text cues, Shorts had hook-value-CTA structure. Fastest output.
Claude produced 5 formats of slightly higher quality — the TikTok script had better pacing, the LinkedIn post had a sharper hook — but took nearly 3x longer to generate and occasionally re-pasted the blog intro into the LinkedIn post, needing an edit.
Perplexity produced 5 formats but they all felt like research summaries. It couldn't detach from its "here's what the source says" default mode.
Winner: ChatGPT, narrowly. For the repurposing workflow specifically — one source, multiple formats, speed matters — ChatGPT's structured multi-output mode is ideal. Test 10: Writing a DM auto-response sequence
Prompt: "Write a 3-message Instagram DM sequence for when someone comments 'link' on a post. Message 1 acknowledges, sends the link. Message 2 (24 hours later) checks in. Message 3 (3 days later) offers a discount. Friendly, not salesy."
ChatGPT wrote three clean messages with correct structure. Message 2's check-in was slightly robotic ("Just following up to see if you had a chance to check out the link!"). Usable with light editing.
Claude wrote three messages that felt human. Message 2 was "hey — no pressure at all, just wanted to flag that the link's still valid if you didn't get round to it." That's the line you'd actually write yourself.
Perplexity wrote three generic messages that sounded like a 2021 email drip sequence. Not its strength.
Winner: Claude. Conversational tone in DMs is voice-heavy, and voice is Claude's home turf.
Test 11: Writing a cold outreach DM (creator partnership)
Prompt: "Write a cold DM to a mid-tier TikTok creator (200k followers, food niche) proposing a paid partnership for our meal kit brand. Under 80 words. Warm, specific, not templated."
ChatGPT's DM opened with "Love what you're doing" — the single most overused opener in creator DMs in 2026. Restarting the prompt with "don't start with 'love what you're doing'" got a better output but required a round trip.
Claude's DM opened with "I saw your video on the rebrand of store-bought pesto last week — the part where you called it 'salty grass' made me screenshot it to my co-founder." Specific, referenced real creator behaviour (even if invented), felt handwritten.
Perplexity's DM was formatted correctly but read like a press release. Outreach is not its lane.
Winner: Claude. Outreach is the ultimate voice test, and Claude wins voice tests.
Test 12: Summarising a 60-min YouTube video into tweet-sized insights
Prompt: (YouTube URL pasted) "Summarise this 60-minute video into 8 tweet-sized insights (under 280 characters each). Keep the author's perspective."
ChatGPT (without browsing enabled) refused the URL and asked for a transcript. With transcript pasted: clean 8-tweet summary, each under 280, decent preservation of the original voice. About 20 seconds.
Claude (with transcript pasted): slightly better voice preservation but two tweets were 290+ characters and needed trimming.
Perplexity pulled the video summary directly from the URL without needing a transcript — that's a big workflow win — and generated 8 insights with citations to specific timestamps. This is the only test where Perplexity's real-time access mattered for creative work.
Winner: Perplexity, with a caveat. If you can give it a URL and have it pull the transcript, it's fastest. If you already have the transcript, ChatGPT and Claude are both fine, with Claude slightly ahead on voice.

Claude won the most tests. But don't read that as "Claude is the best AI for social." Claude won the voice-heavy and nuance-heavy tasks; Perplexity owned the research tasks cleanly; ChatGPT owned the volume and structure tasks. The actual lesson is that none of them is a one-tool answer, and picking based on a general "which is best" question means you'll lose 4-5 tasks out of 12 to the wrong tool.
If you're only going to use one, which do you pick?
This depends entirely on your workflow type, not on which AI is "best."
Pick Claude if you write long-form content, care about brand voice, and hand-edit less. Founders writing their own LinkedIn, copywriters producing branded threads, anyone whose output needs to sound like a person rather than like a marketing department. You'll lose on research tasks and have to Google-check stats separately, but you'll save more time on writing than you'll spend on research.
Pick ChatGPT if you produce volume, run variations, and work across many formats. Agency teams, content studios, anyone who needs 30 captions not 3. The format compliance and speed are unmatched, and you can prompt your way out of the generic-voice problem with enough iterations.
Pick Perplexity if research is your constant bottleneck. Analysts, strategists, anyone writing reports or stat-heavy content. You'll need a second tool for creative writing, but Perplexity won't get you sued over fake statistics, and that's worth its price alone.
