Six styles, one tool
Pick the style that fits the account you're starting
Every style is built on a different pattern. Aesthetic pulls from gentle word banks. Professional appends business-ready suffixes. Gamer glues power words with numbers. Creator pairs niches with names. Pick what fits — or run two and compare. If none feel right, our business name generator is the better starting point.
- Aesthetic.
- Soft, vibe-led handles that pair gentle adjectives with natural nouns — luna.moss, petal.haze, honey.dawn. Strong for art, photography, lifestyle, and personal accounts where the handle is part of the visual identity.
- Professional / Business.
- Brand-ready handles with clean suffixes — yourbrand.studio, yourbrand_official, hello.yourbrand. Built for consultants, agencies, founders, and B2B brands where the handle has to fit on a business card without explanation.
- Gamer.
- Edgy prefixes, power words, and just enough numbers to be available — shadowstrike91, xvenom42, ironreaper. Fits Twitch, Discord, Steam, and competitive game tags where the handle has to look sharp on a leaderboard.
- Creator / Influencer.
- Niche plus name, the way successful creators build a discoverable handle — the.travel.alex, alex.creates, alex.daily. Pulls a role keyword into the username so people searching the niche actually find you.
- Cool / Edgy.
- Short, minimalist, with optional separators or a single number — void.7, rogue, static_. Best when you want the handle to feel deliberate rather than descriptive. Pairs well with a strong visual brand.
- Funny.
- Memorable on purpose — turbo_potato, midnight_avocado, dramatic.walrus. Higher recall than aesthetic handles and a strong fit for comedy, meme accounts, and any niche where personality is the brand.
How to choose the right username
The best username is short, easy to say, hard to misspell, and consistent across every platform you care about. Most people overweight cleverness and underweight searchability. A handle nobody can spell when they hear it on a podcast is a handle you will be re-explaining for years.
Start with a single seed word — your name, your brand, or your niche. Run the generator twice on the style that fits the account you are building, and pick three favourites. Then test all three using our Instagram username checker. The one that is free on Instagram is almost always free on Threads, and 80% likely to be free on TikTok and YouTube. If the same handle is free on all six platforms, claim it on each — even the ones you do not plan to use yet. It costs nothing today and prevents a brand fragmentation problem later.
A few things to avoid: leading or trailing underscores (look spammy), number substitutes for letters (0 for o, 3 for e — algorithmic bot signal), and any handle longer than 15 characters (X will reject it, and humans will not type it). For longer brand names, prefer abbreviations or initials over truncation — “ironforge” reads better than “ironforge_studio_official_2026”.
Platform rules
Username rules per platform
Every platform has different character limits, allowed punctuation, and change frequencies. Copy a handle into our checkers to verify the format works on each. The full per-platform rules are also covered on our Instagram, TikTok, and X checker pages.
- Instagram.
- 1–30 characters. Letters, numbers, periods (.), and underscores (_). Not case-sensitive. Change up to twice every 14 days.
- TikTok.
- 2–24 characters. Letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Can change once every 30 days. No leading or trailing dot.
- YouTube.
- 3–30 characters. Letters, numbers, and underscores in @handles. Most special characters not allowed. One change per 14 days.
- X (Twitter).
- 4–15 characters. Letters, numbers, and underscores only — no periods. Unique across the platform. Change anytime if free.
- LinkedIn.
- 3–100 characters in the public URL slug. Letters, numbers, and hyphens. Change up to five times per six months.
- Threads.
- Tied to your Instagram handle on signup. Change on Instagram and Threads follows automatically. Same 30-character cap.

Check availability across every platform
Once you have favourites, run them through our per-platform checkers. Each one shows the handle status on the relevant network plus a few sibling platforms, and suggests close variations when a handle is taken.
Frequently asked questions
How does a username generator work?
The generator combines word banks and patterns tuned to each style. Aesthetic handles pair soft nouns and adjectives (luna.moss, petal.haze). Gamer handles glue a prefix, a power word, and a number (shadowstrike91). Funny handles mash unlikely pairs (turbo_potato). Every click reshuffles, so you can keep generating until something clicks. It is fully client-side — your seed word never leaves your browser.
Are the generated usernames actually available?
The generator does not yet talk to each platform live, but most handles produced are uncommon enough to be free on at least one network. Every result has a one-click "Check on Instagram" button that opens our checker pre-filled. From there, you can also test the same handle across TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, and Threads. If a handle is taken, just regenerate — you will get a fresh batch in under a second.
What style should I pick?
Aesthetic suits lifestyle, art, and personal accounts that lean visual. Professional fits brands, consultants, and B2B founders. Gamer is built for streaming, Discord, and Twitch handles. Creator pairs a niche with a name — "the.travel.alex" works for travel YouTubers. Cool/Edgy is short and minimalist. Funny is high-recall and great for niche audiences. If you are unsure, try two styles and compare batches.
Should I use the same username everywhere?
Yes, where possible. A consistent handle across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, and Threads makes you findable, makes cross-promotion frictionless, and protects you from impersonators. Use our all-platform username checker to test any handle on all six networks at once. Where a handle is taken on one platform, prefer to compromise (add a suffix) rather than splitting your identity across multiple names.
What length should my username be?
Aim for between 6 and 15 characters. Under 6 is rarely available on the major platforms. Over 15 starts to hit X's 15-character cap and is hard to remember when read aloud. Avoid leading or trailing underscores, double periods, and numbers that look like substitutes (0 for o, 3 for e). Those patterns signal a bot account to both human visitors and the platform algorithms.
Can I use these usernames commercially?
Yes — the handles are algorithmically generated and free to use, but you are responsible for trademark and impersonation checks. Search the USPTO and your local registry for any name with commercial intent before claiming it across platforms. For brand names specifically, our business name generator is the better starting point. Then bring the shortlist back here to find a matching handle.
Does PostEverywhere offer anything beyond the generator?
Yes. Once you have claimed your handle on each platform, PostEverywhere lets you schedule and publish across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads, Facebook, and Pinterest from one dashboard. Plans start at $19/month with a 7-day free trial. The generator stays free forever — there is no signup required to use it.
Now schedule to that fresh new handle
Once your username is locked in, PostEverywhere lets you publish to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads, Facebook and Pinterest from one dashboard — with AI captions, a visual calendar, and best-time-to-post analytics. Starter at $19/month (10 accounts), Growth at $39/month (25 accounts), Pro at $79/month (40 accounts). 7-day free trial on every plan.
