Tips for Choosing a Great Username
- Keep it under 15 characters — shorter handles are easier to remember and fit all platforms
- Avoid special characters — stick to letters, numbers, and underscores for maximum compatibility
- Make it memorable and brand-relevant — your username should reflect who you are or what you do
- Check for trademark conflicts — avoid names that could cause legal issues down the line
- Consider SEO — including a niche keyword (e.g., "janefitness") can boost discoverability
X Username Rules (2026)
X handles can be 4-15 characters long and can only contain letters, numbers, and underscores. No periods, hyphens, or spaces are allowed. Handles always display with a lowercase @ prefix.
The 15-character limit is the shortest of any major platform, so you may need to get creative. Usernames are not case-sensitive — @JohnDoe and @johndoe are the same.
You can change your X handle at any time through Settings, but your old handle becomes immediately available to others. Change during low-traffic hours to minimize the risk of someone snatching your old handle.
Why Your X Handle Matters
Your X handle is how people tag, mention, and find you on the platform. A short, memorable handle makes it easier for others to include you in conversations, which drives more visibility and engagement.
On X, where every character counts (280 limit), a shorter handle means more room for the actual message when someone mentions you. This makes short handles especially valuable.

What to Do If Your X Handle Is Taken
The only separator X allows. Example: @john_doe or @doe_john
Keep it under 15 chars. Example: @jdoe or @jd_writes
Classic prefix approach. Example: @realjohndoe or @thejohndoe
Subtle differentiation. Example: @johndoe_
Shows what you do. Example: @johndoetech
If the handle infringes your trademark, report it through X's Help Center.
