Instagram Image Size Guide (2026)
Instagram supports several aspect ratios, each optimized for a different content format. Using the correct dimensions prevents unwanted cropping and ensures your content looks professional in the feed.
- Feed Post (Portrait 4:5): 1080 x 1350px — takes up the most screen real estate in the feed. Best for engagement.
- Feed Post (Square 1:1): 1080 x 1080px — the classic Instagram format, ideal for product photos and graphics.
- Feed Post (Landscape 1.91:1): 1080 x 566px — best for wide scenes, but takes up less feed space.
- Stories & Reels (9:16): 1080 x 1920px — full-screen vertical format for immersive content.
- Carousel (1:1): 1080 x 1080px — multi-image swipeable posts. All slides share the same aspect ratio.
- Profile Picture: 320 x 320px minimum — displays as a circle at 110px on mobile.
- IGTV Cover (1:1.55): 420 x 654px — the thumbnail shown on your IGTV channel grid.
Tips for Instagram Image Optimization
- Use sRGB color space: Instagram converts all images to sRGB. Uploading in a different color space can cause color shifts.
- Upload at max resolution: Instagram compresses your image regardless, so start with the highest quality to minimize artifacts.
- Keep text in safe zones: For Stories and Reels, keep important text at least 250px from the top and bottom edges to avoid UI overlaps.
- JPG for photos, PNG for graphics: Use JPG for photographs (smaller file size) and PNG for images with text or transparency.
- Avoid over-filtering: Instagram's algorithm can detect heavily filtered images. Natural-looking photos tend to get higher reach.
- Test with dark mode: Many users browse in dark mode. Check that your images look good against both light and dark backgrounds.
- Carousel consistency: Use the same dimensions for every slide in a carousel. Mixing ratios causes awkward cropping.
