X (Twitter) Image Size Guide for 2026
X (formerly Twitter) displays images differently depending on the post format and device. When you upload an image that does not match the recommended dimensions, X will auto-crop it — often cutting off text, faces, or key visual elements. Using correctly sized images ensures your posts look professional and get higher engagement.
The X timeline displays single-image posts at a 16:9 aspect ratio on desktop and roughly 2:1 on mobile. If you attach two images, they display side by side at approximately 7:8 each. Three images use a 7:8 + two 4:7 layout. Four images display in a 2x2 grid. Understanding these layouts helps you compose images that will not be awkwardly cropped when scheduled through a social media scheduler.
For header images (banners), X uses a 3:1 ratio at 1500x500 pixels. The display area varies between desktop and mobile — on mobile, the top and bottom edges may be cropped. Always keep important content (text, logos) centered vertically and leave padding around the edges.
X profile pictures are circular. Even though you upload a square image (400x400 recommended), X crops it into a circle. Make sure important elements stay within the center area and avoid placing text near the edges. Use our X bio generator to craft a compelling profile description to complement your profile picture.

Tips for Optimizing X Images
Use high contrast and bold text. The X timeline moves fast. Images that use bold, readable text overlays and high-contrast colors are more likely to stop the scroll. Keep text to a few words — X auto-crops can cut off longer captions within images. Create engaging captions with our X post generator.
Add alt text to every image. X supports image descriptions (alt text) for accessibility and SEO. Adding descriptive alt text makes your content available to users with screen readers and can improve discoverability.
Stay under the file size limit. X accepts images up to 5 MB for JPG/PNG and 15 MB for GIF. Larger files will be rejected or compressed aggressively by X. Use our PNG/JPG download options to control quality and file size.
Test multi-image layouts. If you plan to post multiple images, remember that X uses different crop ratios for 2, 3, and 4 image galleries. Preview your post using the X app or a post previewer tool before publishing. Schedule your posts at the best time to post for maximum visibility.
Create threads efficiently. When posting image-heavy threads, use our X thread maker to plan your content flow and ensure consistent image sizing across all tweets in the thread.
