# How to Connect ChatGPT to Your Social Media Accounts (2026 Guide) > ChatGPT can now schedule and publish social media posts directly. This guide walks through connecting ChatGPT to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and 8 more platforms using Developer Mode and an MCP server, in about two minutes. **Source:** https://posteverywhere.ai/blog/connect-chatgpt-to-social-media **Author:** Jamie Partridge **Published:** 2026-07-24 --- You are in a ChatGPT conversation, you have just workshopped next week's content ideas, and now comes the boring part: copying each caption into a scheduler, five tabs, eleven platforms, resize this, reformat that. Except now you can type this instead: > "Schedule the three LinkedIn posts we just wrote for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9am, and cross-post the second one to X and Threads." ChatGPT calls a connected tool, your posts land in the queue, and you never leave the chat. No copy-pasting, no tab juggling, no scheduler UI. This became possible when OpenAI shipped Developer Mode with support for custom connectors: ChatGPT can now talk to remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, the same open standard Claude and Cursor use. Point ChatGPT at a social media MCP server and it gains real tools: schedule posts, upload media, generate images, read analytics. This guide walks through the whole setup with [PostEverywhere](/agents), whose hosted MCP server covers Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Discord and Telegram from one connection. It takes about two minutes. *Written by Jamie Partridge, Founder. Published 24 July 2026.* ## Table of Contents 1. [What you need before you start](#what-you-need-before-you-start) 2. The free tier can use built-in apps but cannot add custom connectors yet, per OpenAI's Developer Mode documentation. On Business and Enterprise, a workspace admin may need to enable Developer Mode for your workspace first. **2. A PostEverywhere account with an API key.** Every plan from Starter ($29/mo) includes full API and MCP access; there is no separate developer tier. The [7-day free trial](/pricing) covers everything, so you can test the whole flow before paying anything. Once signed up, connect the social accounts you want ChatGPT to publish to (all [11 platforms](/social-media-scheduler) are included on every plan), then create an API key from the developer settings. Keys look like `pe_live_` followed by a string of characters, and you can revoke them at any time. That is the whole shopping list. No server to deploy, nothing to install, no OAuth app registration. > **Want the fastest possible start?** [Start a 7-day free trial](https://app.posteverywhere.ai/signup), connect two or three accounts, and have ChatGPT scheduling within ten minutes of reading this. $0 charged today, cancel anytime. ## Why ChatGPT can suddenly post to social media For years, "ChatGPT for social media" meant one thing: caption writing. It could draft the post, but you still had to carry the text to every platform by hand. The missing piece was a standard way for ChatGPT to take actions in other software. That piece is the Model Context Protocol. MCP is an open standard, originally proposed by Anthropic and since adopted across the industry, that lets an AI assistant call tools on an external server: list things, create things, upload things. ChatGPT added support for remote MCP servers through Developer Mode, which means any HTTPS MCP endpoint can become a set of tools inside your chats. A social media MCP server sits between the assistant and the networks. The [PostEverywhere MCP server](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@posteverywhere/mcp) exposes 33 tools covering scheduling, publishing, media upload, [AI image generation](/ai-image-generator), account health, campaigns, webhooks and [analytics](/social-media-analytics). Under the hood it talks to each platform's official API, which matters: your accounts stay compliant, and you never hand your Instagram password to a bot. One detail worth understanding: ChatGPT only supports *remote* MCP servers, HTTPS endpoints on the internet. It cannot run a local server on your machine the way Claude Desktop can. That is why PostEverywhere runs a hosted endpoint at `https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai`. The hosted server stores nothing; your key passes through to the API on every request, with the same authentication, tenancy and rate limits as calling the [REST API](/social-media-api) directly. ## Step-by-step: connect ChatGPT via Developer Mode The whole flow is: turn on Developer Mode, add the connector, authorise, prompt. ### Step 1: Turn on Developer Mode In ChatGPT, open **Settings**, go to **Connectors**, then **Advanced settings**, and toggle on **Developer Mode**. On Business or Enterprise workspaces this lives under workspace permissions, and an admin may need to flip it for you. If you cannot see the toggle, check your plan: free accounts do not have it. ### Step 2: Add PostEverywhere as a custom connector Still under Connectors, create a new custom connector and give it a name (call it PostEverywhere) and the server URL: ``` https://mcp.posteverywhere.ai ``` There is no client ID or secret to hunt down. When the connector asks how to authenticate, use your PostEverywhere API key from step zero. The key is scoped to your workspace and revocable from your dashboard at any time, which makes it a safer credential than any password. ### Step 3: Approve the tools ChatGPT shows you what the connector can do before it can do anything. You will see the tool list: create and schedule posts, list accounts, upload media, generate captions and images, read analytics, manage campaigns and webhooks. Approve, and the connector appears in your conversations. ### Step 4: Run a sanity check Start a new chat, make sure the connector is enabled for that conversation, and ask: > "Show me my connected social accounts on PostEverywhere." ChatGPT calls the `list_accounts` tool and returns your linked platforms with their status. If you see your accounts listed, you are live. Total setup time is usually under two minutes. ## Seven prompts to try once connected The point of connecting ChatGPT is that plain language becomes the interface. Some real prompts that map cleanly onto the tools: **1. The multi-platform announcement.** > "Draft a launch post about our new reporting feature, adapt the tone for LinkedIn and X separately, and schedule both for tomorrow at 9am Eastern." **2. The week of content in one message.** > "Take the five content ideas above, write platform-appropriate captions for each, and schedule them Monday to Friday at 10am across LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook." This is [bulk scheduling](/bulk-scheduling) without ever seeing a spreadsheet. **3. The image-included post.** > "Generate a clean product-style image of a desk setup at golden hour, then schedule it to Instagram with the caption we wrote earlier." ChatGPT calls the [AI image generation](/ai-content-generator) tool, gets the media back, and attaches it to the post. **4. The account audit.** > "Which of my accounts have I not posted to in the last two weeks?" **5. The failure recovery.** > "Did anything fail to publish this week? If so, retry it." **6. The performance check.** > "Pull my engagement summary for the last 30 days and tell me which platform is growing fastest." **7. The cross-posting special.** > "Take my latest LinkedIn post and republish it to Threads and Bluesky, adjusting the format for each." That last one is [cross-posting](/cross-posting), the thing PostEverywhere was built around: one piece of content, [published everywhere](/post-to-all-social-media-at-once), formats handled per platform. > **Prefer to see the tools before connecting?** The [agents page](/agents) lists the full 33-tool surface, live client examples and copy-paste configs for every major AI assistant. ## What ChatGPT can actually do with your accounts Once connected, ChatGPT has the same surface a person gets in the dashboard, through 33 tools. In practice they group into five buckets: **Publishing.** Create posts, schedule them for any future time, publish immediately, cross-post to any combination of your connected accounts across the 11 supported platforms. Posts go through each network's official API with per-platform formatting. **Media.** Upload images and video from a URL in one call, or generate images and captions with the built-in AI tools. Credits come with every plan (100/month on Starter, more on [Growth and Pro](/pricing)). **Account management.** List accounts, check connection health before posting (token expiry, recent failures, can-post status), so a stale connection never silently eats a scheduled post. This matters more than it sounds; it is the difference between an agent that works and one you have to babysit. Our guide to [multi-account management](/multi-account-management) covers the workspace side. **Recovery.** List failed posts and retry them, individually or in bulk. If TikTok had a bad hour, one prompt re-queues everything that bounced. **Measurement.** Pull engagement, reach and follower metrics across platforms, per account or aggregated, straight into the conversation where ChatGPT can actually analyse them. Pair it with our [engagement rate benchmarks](/blog/social-media-engagement-rate-benchmarks) to know whether your numbers are good. If you want the full technical reference, the [developer docs](/developers) list every tool and endpoint, and the [social media API guide](/blog/social-media-scheduling-api-guide) walks the REST side end to end. ## Alternative: a Custom GPT with Actions There is a second, older path: build a Custom GPT and wire the PostEverywhere REST API into it with GPT Actions, OpenAI's OpenAPI-based tool system. When would you pick Actions over the MCP connector? - **You want to share the capability with a team.** A Custom GPT can be shared with your workspace, so colleagues get "the social media GPT" without each doing connector setup. - **You want tight guardrails.** A Custom GPT's instructions can constrain what it will post, in what tone, and with what approval language, useful when the person prompting is not the person responsible for the brand account. The trade-offs: Actions require you to paste an OpenAPI schema and manage auth in the GPT editor, and you get a narrower slice of the surface than the full 33 MCP tools. For an individual operator, the Developer Mode connector is less work and more capable. For a team distributing a controlled tool, a Custom GPT is worth the setup. Our [build a social media agent guide](/blog/build-social-media-agent-api) covers the API-first version of this pattern. ## Using Claude, Cursor or Codex instead Everything above works because MCP is a standard, which means the same server connects to every major assistant, not just ChatGPT: - **Claude Code and Claude Desktop**: full walkthrough in our [Claude Code MCP setup guide](/blog/how-to-use-posteverywhere-with-claude-code-mcp). - **Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Zed**: same JSON config block, documented with copy-paste examples on the [agents page](/agents). - **Codex CLI**: same server, TOML config. - **Your own agent**: LangChain, CrewAI, or a plain loop over the [REST API](/social-media-api) with the Node SDK. If you are choosing which assistant should own your social workflow, our comparison of the [best AI agents for social media](/blog/best-ai-agents-for-social-media) and the wider list of [social media tools for AI agents](/blog/best-social-media-tools-for-ai-agents) map the landscape. > **Building something bigger than a personal workflow?** The same key drives the [REST API](/developers), webhooks, campaigns and bulk endpoints. Everything is included from $29/mo, with no enterprise gate. ## Limits, safety and troubleshooting **Free ChatGPT accounts cannot add custom connectors.** Developer Mode requires Plus or above. If the toggle is missing, that is why. **ChatGPT needs remote servers.** If you found the open-source `@posteverywhere/mcp` package and tried to run it locally for ChatGPT, that works for Claude Desktop and Cursor but not ChatGPT, which only connects to HTTPS endpoints. Use the hosted URL instead. **Approve before it posts.** Treat a connected assistant like a new team member: for the first week, ask it to schedule drafts rather than publish immediately, and review the queue in the [content calendar](/social-media-calendar). ChatGPT is good at formatting; your judgement should still own what ships. **Rate limits.** The API allows 60 requests per minute per key. Normal conversational use never gets close; a prompt that fans out into hundreds of posts should use the bulk tools, which batch up to 50 posts per call. **Revoke anytime.** The connector's only credential is your API key. Delete the key in your dashboard and the connector goes inert instantly, with no password ever exposed. **If tools do not appear:** confirm Developer Mode is on, the connector is enabled for the specific conversation, and the server URL has no trailing slash typos. On Business/Enterprise, confirm your admin has allowed custom connectors. ## FAQs ### Can ChatGPT really post to Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn? Yes, through a connected MCP server that publishes via each platform's official API. ChatGPT itself has no native posting ability; the connector supplies the tools. With PostEverywhere connected, ChatGPT can create, schedule and publish to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, Discord and Telegram. ### Do I need to know how to code? No. The setup is: toggle Developer Mode, paste one URL, authorise with an API key. There is no code, no terminal and nothing to install. The coding paths (SDK, REST API, Custom GPT Actions) exist for people building products, not for using the connector. ### Which ChatGPT plan do I need? Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Custom connectors via Developer Mode are not available on the free tier. On Business and Enterprise, an admin may need to enable Developer Mode for the workspace. ### Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to my social accounts? The connector never sees your social passwords. It authenticates with a revocable API key, and every action flows through official platform APIs with the same permissions you granted PostEverywhere. You can revoke the key at any time, and ChatGPT shows you the tool list for approval before anything runs. ### Does this cost extra on the PostEverywhere side? No. API, MCP and CLI access are included on every plan from $29/mo. There is a 7-day free trial (card required, $0 charged today) so you can test the entire flow first. ### Can ChatGPT generate the images for my posts too? Yes. The connector includes AI image and caption generation tools that draw on your plan's monthly credits, so a single prompt can go from idea to finished, scheduled post with artwork attached. ### What is the difference between this and Zapier? Zapier-style tools run pre-built "when X do Y" pipelines. A connected assistant reasons in the conversation: it can draft, adapt tone per platform, decide timings, check account health and recover failures, all within one chat. They solve different problems; for conversational, judgement-heavy social work, the assistant wins. ### Can I connect Claude and ChatGPT at the same time? Yes. The hosted server accepts any number of MCP clients. Many people run Claude Code for developer workflows and ChatGPT for content workflows against the same PostEverywhere workspace with the same key or separate keys per client. --- The gap between "ChatGPT writes my captions" and "ChatGPT runs my posting" turned out to be one URL. Connect it once, and the most tedious part of social media, the ferrying of content from where it is written to where it is published, simply stops being your job.
